Tell the referee we need a time out, cause I’m callin’ bullshit on this!
This huge banner was put up recently to advertise the Trinity Apartment building on 9th and Market.
Now, while I’m personally not gay, and it’s not my big gay party they’re capitalizing on, I still feel that this kind of shameless, opportunistic marketing trivializes the importance of the gay rights movement.
Does Budweiser emblazon their merchandise with the Rainbow flag to show solidarity with those who fought at Stonewall? No. Does Miller Lite use the word “Pride” in its advertising because of how much more ..ahem.. fabulous it is than plain old MGD? No! Cheap beer comes out of the fridge, not the closet! But if advertisers saved all that shamrock shit for St. Patrick’s day like they should, instead of slapping pink triangles all over mass produced schwag, they’d miss out on all that green.
As for Trinity Apartments, I wonder if they also celebrate Black History Month in a similarly self-promotional manner. Hmmmmm…..

maybe I can’t say this, not personally being gay, either, but I’m going to, anyway. My perception is that the gay rights movement in San Francisco has become a victim of its own success, and this is only one of many ways it might be being trivialized. That said, I’ve noticed that much advertising for rentals or property is lame and offensive in some way or other. Have you considered actually putting something like the above invitation to black tenants on that building, or one of the many wretched condo complexes or live/work developments everywhere? Might be fun…
