What’s a girl gotta do to get a meal around here?
It seems that with every passing day another bar or restaurant I’ve come to know over the years shuts down, or is swallowed up by the overstuffed upper crust and their bottomless greed for property and power.
Gone is my beloved King Diner, home of 24 hour greasy burgers and an all night freak/tweak show guaranteed to never disappoint.

Gone is the Polk St. Station, whose chocolate milkshakes were unrivaled in my opinion.

Gone too is Bob’s Broiler, further up Polk, along with their fabulous 50’s signage.

Along with the cheapest eats by the zoo, now gone for good, Carousel.
It has been proven once more that nothing is sacred since the closure and “renovation” of the century old House of Shields.
Even the lowly Tempest is doomed for “renewal” having recently been purchased by the same people that own the trendy, upscale eateries Momo’s, Pete’s Tavern, and Pedro’s Cantina. (Pete Osborne).
And what has gone up in their place? Nothing of interest to anyone but the elite.
In a town of 7 dollar burritos, artisan pizza, and 4 dollar PBRs, where are the people who actually live here expected to go for drinks and a bite? It’s not as if cooking at home has gotten any cheaper, thanks to the proliferation of Whole Foods and other upscale super markets. Hell, even McDonalds is doing away with the dollar menu at some locations!
I swear, if the gas station by my house didn’t offer 2 hotdogs for $1.50, I would surely starve.

I miss King and bob’s the most! Where’s that gas station?
Good old Chevron at 16th and South Van Ness.
The King Diner and Carousel are gone? :::sob:::. I grew up in the Sunset. That’s a part of my youth destroyed. Is Leon’s BBQ still around? I feel so sad…
Sadly, it appears that Leon’s , too, has closed.
Leon passed away and the place went downhill from there and closed. Late 90′s or early 2000??? I lived around the corner from them on 47th and wawona.
Ah, so you awoke in the morning to the sound of the gibbons at the zoo whooping it up, as did I. 39th and Taraval.
Damn! I loved the King! Always the best place for dinner & a show…
The King was originally a Doggie Diner. At least until ’73 or so. :::sigh:::
